- Open the converter with Split selected.
- Select exactly one PDF and confirm its filename; the file may be up to 50 MiB.
- Start conversion and leave the tab open while every page is rendered.
- Download the ZIP and extract it with your operating system's archive tool.
- Compare the numbered files with the source from page 1 through the final page.
The current operation processes every page. It does not accept a custom range, odd/even selection, or a request for only one chosen page.
How the numbered output is organized
Each source page becomes a separate one-page PDF. If the source is report.pdf, filenames follow the pattern report-page-1.pdf, report-page-2.pdf, and so on. All of those PDFs are packaged in one ZIP. Keep the page numbers intact until review is complete; renaming files too early can hide a missing or misplaced page.
Splitting does not reduce the source to a selected excerpt. If only pages 8 through 10 are needed, extract the complete ZIP, retain the corresponding numbered files, and securely remove the rest where appropriate. Preserve the original PDF separately.
Visible page quality versus PDF structure
For each page, PDF.js renders at scale 2 onto a white canvas. On an ordinary PDF based on 72-point-per-inch coordinates, scale 2 is nominally about 144 pixels per inch. The rendered canvas is encoded as JPEG at quality 0.92 and placed in a newly created one-page PDF.
The resulting PDFs are visual copies rather than object-preserving extracts. Searchable text, vectors, interactive links, forms, bookmarks, layers, attachments, accessibility tags, and source metadata do not carry over. Annotation appearances may remain as pixels, while annotation objects and actions do not. Digital signatures are invalid after rebuilding. White canvas fill also means any transparent page regions become white.
Rasterization can increase file size and soften fine text, thin rules, or barcodes. JPEG compression can add artifacts around sharp edges. Review at 100% zoom and print a representative page if physical output is important.
Input, browser limits, and privacy
The Split tool accepts one PDF up to 50 MiB. Page count is not the only workload measure: high-resolution scans and large page dimensions create large decoded canvases. Available browser memory and implementation-specific canvas limits can prevent a permitted file from completing. Close unnecessary tabs and avoid parallel conversion jobs when processing a long document.
Processing happens in the browser; selected PDF content is not sent to the document-conversion API. Third-party scripts and fonts are still requested by the page, so the tool should not be described as fully offline. Read the Privacy Policy and follow your organization's handling rules for sensitive material.
No password-entry step exists. Encrypted or password-protected PDFs may not open. If authorized, prepare an unlocked working copy in suitable PDF software and retain the protected original.
Cases that need another workflow
- Use an extraction tool that preserves PDF objects when selectable text, vector graphics, tags, links, comments, forms, or metadata must remain.
- Use a page-range editor when only selected pages should be extracted without first producing every page.
- Use a signature-aware tool when signed-document validity or legal evidence is important.
- Use OCR after an appropriate structure-preserving extraction if image-only pages must become searchable.
- Use desktop software for exceptionally long or high-resolution PDFs that exceed practical browser memory.

Inspect a complete six-page split set
The existing test used a 13.0 KB searchable six-page PDF. Split produced a 1.49 MB ZIP containing six numbered, one-page PDFs. The source's six visible pages were represented, but the outputs were image-based and substantially larger. This test describes only the downloadable sample and does not establish performance or size for other PDFs.
Repeat the test method
- Open the source and record its page count.
- Extract the ZIP and count the one-page PDFs.
- Compare the first, middle, and last files with the corresponding source pages.
- Search for a known phrase, inspect fine detail at 100%, and test interactive features if they matter.
Troubleshooting split results
The ZIP seems to be missing pages
Extract the archive before counting and sort filenames by their numeric page suffix. Compare the highest suffix with the source page count. If conversion did not finish, retry with other memory-heavy tabs closed.
The output is much larger than the source
A compact text-and-vector PDF can grow when every page becomes a JPEG image inside a new PDF. Size expansion is expected for some sources and is not proof that extra detail was created.
Small text looks softer
The source was rasterized at scale 2 and JPEG-encoded. If fine typography, technical lines, or machine-readable codes must remain exact, use object-preserving page extraction instead.
The source requests a password
There is no password workflow in the converter. Use authorized PDF software to create a suitable working copy rather than repeatedly retrying the locked file.

Can I split only selected pages?
No. This tool rebuilds every page. Select the needed numbered PDFs after extracting the ZIP.
Why is the result a ZIP?
A ZIP keeps all one-page PDFs in a single download and avoids a sequence of browser download prompts.
Are the one-page PDFs searchable?
No. Each contains a JPEG rendering of the page rather than the original text and vector objects.
